A passage from Mikhail Lermontov's Work

The below passage from the novel "A hero of our time" by Mihail Lermontov touched my heart the first time I read it - and continued doing so in each rereading.

I returned home by the deserted byways of the village. The moon, full and red like the glow of a conflagration, was beginning to make its appearance from behind the jagged horizon of the house-tops; the stars were shining tranquilly in the deep, blue vault of the sky; and I was struck by the absurdity of the idea when I recalled to mind that once upon a time there were some exceedingly wise people who thought that the stars of heaven participated in our insignificant squabbles for a slice of ground, or some other imaginary rights. And what then? These lamps, lighted, so they fancied, only to illuminate their battles and triumphs, are burning with all their former brilliance, whilst the wiseacres themselves, together with their hopes and passions, have long been extinguished, like a little fire kindled at the edge of a forest by a careless wayfarer! But, on the other hand, what strength of will was lent them by the conviction that the entire heavens, with their innumerable habitants, were looking at them with a sympathy, unalterable, though mute!... And we, their miserable descendants, roaming over the earth, without faith, without pride, without enjoyment, and without terror—except that involuntary awe which makes the heart shrink at the thought of the inevitable end—we are no longer capable of great sacrifices, either for the good of mankind or even for our own happiness, because we know the impossibility of such happiness; and, just as our ancestors used to fling themselves from one delusion to another, we pass indifferently from doubt to doubt, without possessing, as they did, either hope or even that vague though, at the same time, keen enjoyment which the soul encounters at every struggle with mankind or with destiny.

These and many other similar thoughts passed through my mind, but I did not follow them up, because I do not like to dwell upon abstract ideas—for what do they lead to? In my early youth I was a dreamer; I loved to hug to my bosom the images—now gloomy, now rainbowhued—which my restless and eager imagination drew for me. And what is there left to me of all these? Only such weariness as might be felt after a battle by night with a phantom—only a confused memory full of regrets. In that vain contest I have exhausted the warmth of soul and firmness of will indispensable to an active life. I have entered upon that life after having already lived through it in thought, and it has become wearisome and nauseous to me, as the reading of a bad imitation of a book is to one who has long been familiar with the original.

The events of that evening produced a somewhat deep impression upon me and excited my nerves. I do not know for certain whether I now believe in predestination or not, but on that evening I believed in it firmly. The proof was startling, and I, notwithstanding that I had laughed at our forefathers and their obliging astrology, fell involuntarily into their way of thinking. However, I stopped myself in time from following that dangerous road, and, as I have made it a rule not to reject anything decisively and not to trust anything blindly, I cast metaphysics aside and began to look at what was beneath my feet. The precaution was well-timed. I only just escaped stumbling over something thick and soft, but, to all appearance, inanimate. I bent down to see what it was, and, by the light of the moon, which now shone right upon the road, I perceived that it was a pig which had been cut in two with a sabre... I had hardly time to examine it before I heard the sound of steps, and two Cossacks came running out of a byway. One of them came up to me and enquired whether I had seen a drunken Cossack chasing a pig. I informed him that I had not met the Cossack and pointed to the unhappy victim of his rabid bravery.

M.Krishnan Nair's Sahitya Varaphalam

"Genius is without strain" - quotes the late Sri M.Krishnan Nair, in Sahitya Varaphalam!

Some quotes : -

A beautiful girl in the village was pregnant. Her angry parents demanded to know who was the father. At first resistant to confess, the anxious and embarrassed girl finally pointed to Hakuin, the Zen master whom everyone previously revered for living such a pure life. When the outraged parents confronted Hakuin with their daughter's accusation, he simply replied "Is that so?"

When the child was born, the parents brought it to the Hakuin, who now was viewed as a pariah by the whole village. They demanded that he take care of the child since it was his responsibility. "Is that so?" Hakuin said calmly as he accepted the child.

For many months he took very good care of the child until the daughter could no longer withstand the lie she had told. She confessed that the real father was a young man in the village whom she had tried to protect. The parents immediately went to Hakuin to see if he would return the baby. With profuse apologies they explained what had happened. "Is that so?" Hakuin said as he handed them the child.

'I see my way as birds their trackless way--
I shall arrive! what time, what circuit first,
I ask not: but unless God send his hail
Or blinding fire-balls, sleet, or stifling snow,
In some time--his good time--I shall arrive;
He guides me and the bird. In His good time!'

Sri Ramachandra Stuthi (To be chanted with Hanuman Chalisa)

Sri Ramachandra Stuthi (To be chanted with Hanuman Chalisa)

Here's the divine Sri Ramachandra Stuthi authored by RamBhakt Sant Tulsidas, who was the author of the great Hanuman Chalisa. Note the Signature verse mentioning the author name at the end. It's short, yet deep and moving and ideal for chanting with Hanuman Chalisa. Remember, the easiest way to be blessed by Hanuman is to pray to Sri Rama with full heart.!!

Sri Ramachandra Sthuthi

Sri Ramachandra Krupalu bhaju bhaya bhava bhaya dharunam,
Nava kanja lochana, kanja mukha, Kara kanja, pada kanjarunam.

Sing about that merciful Ramachandra,
For driving away the fears of miserable life,
For he has lotus like eyes, Lotus like face,
Lotus like hands and lotus like legs.

Kandarpa aganitha amitha cchavi, navanila neerada sundaram,
Pata peetha maanahu thaditha, ruchi suchi naumi janaka suthavaram.

My salutations to the consort of Sita,
Who is prettier than countless cupids,
Who is pretty like the freshly formed cloud,
And is clad in ever pure yellow silks,
Which shines like the lightning.

Bhaju dheenabandhu dinesa dhanava daithya vamsa nikandanam,
Raghunanda aanandakanda kaushala chanda, dasaratha nandanam.

Pray to that Sun-like friend of the oppressed,
Who exterminated the clan of asuras and Rakshasas,
Who is the source of joy belonging to the clan of Raghu.
And who is the son of Dasratha and moon to the Kosala.

Sira makuta kundala charu udharu anga vibhooshanam,
Aajanubhuja sara chapa dhara, samgrama jitha kara dhooshanam.

He is adorned on his head by a crown,
Wears ornaments over his pretty body,
Carries bow and arrow in his long hands,
And in war won over Khara and Dhooshana.

Ithi vadathi Thulasidasa, Sankara sesha muni mana ranjanam,
Mama hrudaya kanju nivasa, karu kamadhi khala dala ganjanam.

Thus tells the saint Thulasidasa,
To him who entertains the mind,
Of Shankara, Sesha and other sages,
Oh Lord live in the lotus of my mind,
And destroy completely desires,
And evil thoughts for ever.

Swami Sivananda on Ghost-world

An except from "LIGHT ON THE YOGA WAY OF LIFE" by Swami Sivananda.

Question: Please throw some light on the Ghost-world. Does it exist?

Answer: Yes. It does exist. It is only the interim stage when, after giving up the physical
body, the soul has not yet taken the next body. Then, we live in a subtle condition. The Vasanas, Samskaras, all the subtle portions of the mind are there. Therefore that subtle thing has got the same nature, same likes and dislikes, as the person when he was living on earth.
Just as some Karmas are worked out in the physical body, some other Karmas are worked
out in the Preta Sareera also. That is what we call the heaven and the hell. If the person has committed some extremely heinous negative action, then in the Preta-state, he is sometimes caught up. He has to remain in that state for a long time. His nature is so bad that he
cannot remain quiet. And so, sometimes he causes trouble to people, always haunts such localities where he had been accustomed to indulge himself while living here. These are the bad Pretas. They are extremely bad spirits who, while living, had committed, say a number of murders and lived a very sinful life; even they can be helped by prayers; and they are speeded up on their journey. For instance, people who commit suicide sometimes get caught up in their subtle bodies. We do charity, we do Japa, or we conduct Bhagavata Saptaha, and thus get them released from their tangle.

There was a Swami in South India. He had a young wife who never agreed to his taking Sannyasa. When he did take Sannyasa, she fell into a well and committed suicide. She became a Preta and was caught up; she could not get into another body. The Swami came to know of her condition. By a Tarpana, he gave her the power of one day’s Gayatri Japa. At once she was released from her miserable condition. Even now there are Pretas wandering about us. There is no necessity to fear Pretas. Those who lead a pure life, who do Gayatri Japa and are devoted to God, cannot be troubled by even the bad Pretas.

Normally the Pretas remain as such for a considerable time. But, when a man has very intense desires in connection with some unfulfilled work, sometimes he is immediately born. But, usually a long period of time elapses, and we have to bear in mind that the computation of time in the Preta-world is not the same as ours—their years are much longer from our point of view.

Chanting the holy Vishnu Sahasranama

Originally posted in a discussion forum in April 2011

To think that the Vishnu Sahasranama is a mere remedy to afflictions caused by Budha graha is a misconception. Numerous are instances over the ages, where people have reported great miracles happening in their life, after starting regular Japa of Vishnu Sahasranama. The twin works of Vishnu Sahasranama and Bhagavad Gita both occurring in the Mahabharatha are referred to as "Moksha Shastras' and have commentaries written by the great Sri Shankaracharya. In BPHS Parashara Rishi praises the greatness of Bhagavan Vishnu in over 30 verses, starting thus...

Eko Avyaktaatmako Vishnuranaadhih Prabhureeshwaraha
Suddhasattvo Jagat swaamee Nirgunasthrigunaanvithaha

The One God, imperceptible, timeless, beginningless, Ruler,Lord of all, is Vishnu the Lord of the whole universe, of Pure Sattva Guna, yet devoid of gunas as well, while at the same time manifested into all 3 Gunas.

(many of these epithets, like Ekah, Avyaktah, Prabhureeshwaraha et al, occur in the Vishnu Sahasranama)

Samsaarakaarakah Sreemaan Nimittatmaa Prathapavaan
Ekamsena Jagat Sarvam Srujatyavathi leelayaa

As the kaaraka of the nature, he is the source of all 3 gunas, and he is full of auspiciousness, the basic cause of the world, the Supreme Magnificent Power, who with one amsa of himself creates and maintains the entire universe, for his play.

I give below what the phalasruti to the Vishnu Sahasranama itself states, about it's efficacy.....

Ya Idam Srunuyaan Nityam Yaschaabhi Parikeertayet
Na Asubham Praapnuyaat Kimchit Somuthreha Cha Maanavaha

Wherever he may be, whether in this world or worlds beyond, nothing inauspicious will befall the one who devoutly listens to the recital of this Sahasranaama Stotra daily as well as the one who recites it.

Vedantago Brahmanaha Syaat Kshatriyo Vijayee Bhavet
Vaisyo Dhansamruddhaha Syaat Soodraha Sukham Avaapnuyaat

A person who chants these names with a Brahmana Guna, will attain knowledge of the Vedanta, if with a Kshatriya guna,he will become a victorious warrior,if a Vaisya guna,he will acquire immense wealth and if with Soodra guna he will remain happy. (The characteristics of these gunas are detailed in Chapters 17-18 of the Bhagavad Gita)

Dharmaarthee Praapnuyaat Dharmam Artthaartthee Cha Arttham Aaapnuyaat
Kaaman Avaapnuyaat Kaamee Prajaartthee Cha Apnuyaat Prajaaha

If a person recites the Holy names with a desire abiding in Dharma will achieve it. If he is desirous of wealth he will get wealth. If he is after pleasures of life he will get them all. If he wants to have progeny he will have it. In essence, those who recite these Holy names of the Lord, will reap the desired fruits without fail.
